AMP Capital has positioned Bayfair Shopping Centre in Tauranga, New Zealand, to take advantage of the increasing trend towards electric vehicles and environmental sustainability by introducing free charging facilities for electric vehicles and mobility scooters at the centre.
Two chargers for electric vehicles and two mobility scooter charging points have been installed for shoppers to use free of charge. The centre has also launched a user-pays fast charger for people who want to charge their vehicle in the time it takes to buy and drink a cup of coffee. It otherwise takes approximately six hours to fully charge a standard electric vehicle.
AMP Capital will also investigate demand for electric vehicle charging points at its other centres in Australia and New Zealand during 2016.
AMP Capital Shopping Centres Managing Director Bryan Hynes said: “Major technology advances have pushed electric vehicles past a tipping point and made them an increasingly viable and attractive option for everyday road users. We want to move with this trend, which is why we have upgraded Bayfair Shopping Centre to now offer a charging station for electric vehicles and mobility scooters with the support of Powerco and Charge Net NZ. This is a great investment, not only for the long-term future of the centre but it also has positive repercussions for the local environment.”
The installation of the charging station at Bayfair has been made possible with funding support from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Environmental Enhancement Fund. The installation of the fast charger has been funded by Charge Net NZ and Powerco. AMP Capital owns 42 per cent of Powerco through its Infrastructure Equity business.
AMP Capital Head of Australia and New Zealand Infrastructure Equity Funds and Powerco Director Michael Cummings said: “This is another example of AMP Capital’s strength in global real assets. We’ve been able to leverage our property and infrastructure equity capabilities to create a solution that has farreaching benefits for the local community, our business and investors.”
The Hon. Simon Bridges, New Zealand Minister of Energy and Resources and Minister of Transport, officially opened the charging stations at Bayfair today.
